L.A City Council Will Meet Remotely Next Week Amid Calls For Resignations

The Los Angeles City Council has announced they will be meeting remotely next week, following L.A City Councilman Mike Bonin revealing that he tested positive for Covid-19, after a week of explosive City Council meetings.

Outraged L.A citizens showed up protesting both inside and outside City Hall chambers, following the racism scandal and leaked audio surrounding four of L.A’s most prominent Latino leaders and power-brokers.

Nury Martinez and three powerful Latino leaders in L.A were caught on audio undermining Black, political power through redistricting, as well as making and supporting derogatory statements about Black, gay, and indigenous constituents they serve in L.A.

Martinez, along with De Leon and Cedillo, had taken a meeting with Ron Herrera, President of the Federation to discuss redistricting.

“My goal in life is to get the three of you elected, and you know, I’m just focused on that,” Ron Herrera, president of the L.A County Federation of Labor told Council members Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León. “I mean, we’re like the little Latino caucus of, you know, our own.”

Nury Martinez has since resigned from the L.A City Council, while calls are intensifying for De Leon and Cedillio to resign as well.

Herrera immediately stepped down as President of the Federation after news of the leaked audio broke Sunday morning.

The hour-long audio was recorded during a meeting in 2021 at the headquarters of the L.A County Federation of Labor.

L.A Councilman Mitch O’Farrell is currently acting Council President and many are hoping the next Council President will be a Black man or council woman.

The L.A City Council is expected to make a vote on Council President next week.
