A Step to Freedom Receives $1 Million to Combat Homelessness in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA – In support of the fight against homelessness in Los Angeles, Congresswoman Maxine Waters presented a $1 million grant to the non-profit organization A Step to Freedom (ASF) on the opening day of its 11th Annual “Warm the Streets” initiative. With this funding, ASF aims to enhance its outreach and housing services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County, especially in South Los Angeles.
The event, held at ASF’s headquarters, saw community leaders, volunteers, and advocates gather for a check presentation ceremony and media day.
The two-day “Warm the Streets” initiative kicked off the following day, with ASF’s street teams distributing over 400 blankets to unhoused residents in South Los Angeles, Downtown Los Angeles, and Inglewood. This annual effort, which has provided thousand of blankets since its inception, aims to bring warmth and hope to those living on the streets as temperatures drop.

Representative Waters, known for her long-standing advocacy for Black Angeleno’s, remains committed to addressing homelessness in Los Angeles. She applauded ASF’s work and commitment to providing essential services, housing, and support systems that empower individuals to rebuild their lives.
Kenya Croom, Executive Director of ASF, expressed her gratitude for the much-needed financial support.
“We are extremely excited and blessed to receive this funding to expand our resources. It is our mission to bring attention to the growing crisis of homelessness in Los Angeles, especially in South L.A.”
She also emphasized the importance of working together to combat homelessness, praising Representative Waters for her unwavering dedication to serving this community for over 33 years.
Founded in 1991 by Kenneth Croom, A Step to Freedom was born from Kenneth’s own experiences with the justice system. ASF has since grown into a vital support system for the Los Angeles community, offering comprehensive services to justice-impacted and homeless individuals.
Under Kenya Croom’s leadership, ASF has expanded its focus to long-term solutions, including interim housing, case management, and wraparound services aimed at breaking cycles of homelessness and incarceration.
