Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price held a community swear-in and celebration yesterday for his new role as L.A City Council President Pro Tempore.
Price represents the 9th District and is serving his last term in office following his re-election earlier this year.
Councilman Paul Krekorian (CD13) was voted in as Council president following the fallout at City Hall around the Nury Martinez leaked audio scandal. The audio revealed Martinez, along with two other and council-members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillio, engaged in demeaning conversations about L.A constituents.
Price has been on the L.A City Council since 2013 and chairs the Economic Development and Jobs Committee.
Civil rights leaders and Black Los Angeles called on the L.A City Council to elect a Black Council President, following the turmoil that continues to unfolded at City Hall surrounding L.A politics.
“Great to join the City family and Council District 9 tonight as we celebrate Council-member Curren Price on his re-election. Leaders like Council-member Price will continue to chart the course to a more just, prosperous and kind future for all Angeleno’s.”
Mayor Eric Garcetti
Nury Martinez and the other Latino council-members had taken a meeting with Ron Herrera, then President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, to discuss redistricting and consolidating their political power.

Martinez and Herrera have both resigned.
Cedillo and de Leon however, revealed they have no plans to leave their roles, which has left the council in turmoil.
Both Councilmen continue to be absent from meetings and have been removed from their committee’s.
Protesters continue to show up at City Hall demanding both their resignations and disrupting Council meetings. Black Lives Matter have been camped outside de Leon’s home, where he has not been spotted in over two weeks.
“As a 71-year-old Black man, I’ve had my fair share of experience fighting against adversities. From living through a time of segregation, to the social justice revolutions today. We’ve got some difficult days ahead, but I have infinite hope that working together works.”
Councilman Curren Price
The City Council voted 11-0 to appoint Price as President Pro Tempore, which is the second in command of the City Council.
