The Los Angeles City Council has appointed Heather Hutt as interim Councilwoman of District 10.
Five members of L.A City Council voted against appointing Heather Hutt as interim District 10 Councilwoman Tuesday, saying the public needed more time to weigh in. Today, Hutt was appointed to the council after a 12-2 vote.
She is the first Black woman to represent CD10 and the third Black woman to sit on L.A City Council.
“I care deeply about this district, it is my home, and I cannot begin to describe how much I appreciate this opportunity to serve,” said Hutt. “Thank you to my neighbors throughout the district for supporting me.
I will work hard. I will be diligent. I will be available. Nothing is too big and nothing is too small. As my prior bosses have told me, our jobs are for constituents. That’s why we’re here. And that’s what we’ll do – continue to serve,” Hutt said in a statement.

Hutt’s selection comes after a judge blocked L.A City Councilman Herb Wesson from sitting on the council as an interim replacement for Mark Ridley-Thomas.
The issues stemmed from The Southern Leadership Conference of Southern California filing a lawsuit challenging the legality of Wesson’s appointment, saying he was termed out.
Wesson represented the 10th district from 2005-2020 also serving as L.A City Council President from 2012-2020.
Wesson was appointed as interim Councilman for Ridley-Thomas, after MRT was indicted on federal charges along with a Dean of USC’s School of Social Work in 2020.
