LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Thousands of Angelenos gathered at the Los Angeles Central Library on Saturday June 13th, 2026 for the fourth annual June Jubilee, a daylong celebration of Black excellence, culture, education, wellness, and community. Hosted by the Los Angeles Public Library, the free event transformed the historic Central Library into a vibrant hub of learning, creativity, and cultural expression, offering dozens of workshops, performances, exhibits, and family-friendly activities for attendees of all ages.
The celebration began with an African-inspired opening ceremony featuring a traditional water libation honoring ancestors and community, accompanied by drummers, dancers, and an original poem by Erika Jones, setting an uplifting tone that carried throughout the day.
From there, attendees spread across the library to experience dozens of simultaneous programs designed for every generation. Visitors were immersed in programming at the Los Angeles Central library that highlighted the richness and diversity of Black culture and achievement.

Held in advance of Juneteenth, the free, day-long event turned every corner of the iconic Downtown Los Angeles landmark into an interactive experience, offering visitors a full schedule of performances, educational workshops, cultural exhibits, hands-on activities and opportunities to celebrate Black history while creating new memories together.
Families participated in interactive experiences including Double Dutch demonstrations by the Melanated Jump Squad, face painting, arts and crafts activities, bracelet making, scavenger hunts, and a popular photo booth that captured memories from across the event.

Health and wellness remained a central theme throughout the day. Guests attended sessions on mental wellness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits, followed by a healthy soul food cooking demonstration highlighting recipes that nourish both body and spirit.
One of the most meaningful additions to this year’s event was the CommUnity Archives project, which invited Angelenos to share personal stories and oral histories. Through one-on-one interviews with community archivists, participants contributed to a growing collection of narratives that will help preserve the lived experiences and legacy of Los Angeles communities for future generations.

Storytelling was woven throughout the 2026 June Jubilee. One of the featured presentations, “AfroCentric Style: A Celebration of Blackness & Identity in Pop Culture,” by author Shirley Neal explored the ways fashion, style and self-expression have shaped Black identity and influenced popular culture.
The discussion invited audiences to consider the historical and cultural significance of Black aesthetics while celebrating the creativity that continues to impact entertainment, media and fashion worldwide.

Visitors also explored exhibits from the Afro-American Quilters of Los Angeles, whose work demonstrated the enduring role of quilting as a form of artistic expression and cultural preservation.
Creativity flourished across the library through hands-on workshops inspired by Black history, Afrofuturism, and self-expression. Participants designed ancestral masks inspired by the legacy of Octavia E. Butler, created handcrafted jewelry, and produced personal zines that reflected their own stories and experiences.

The event’s atmosphere reflected the spirit of Juneteenth itself: a celebration of freedom, achievement, cultural pride, and community connection. From children discovering new stories to adults tracing family roots the 2026 June Jubilee created space for learning, reflection, and joy.
As L.A continues to honor Juneteenth through cultural programming and community engagement, the Los Angeles Public Library’s June Jubilee has established itself as one of the city’s premier annual celebrations of Black culture and excellence.
By bringing together artists, educators, historians, performers, and families under one roof, the event demonstrated the power of storytelling, heritage, and community-driven learning. For many attendees, the day served as both a celebration of the past and an investment in the future—a reminder that Black history, creativity, and excellence remain central to the story of Los Angeles.
