Compton Cemetery Owners Demand Action After Grave Marker Thefts

Compton, CA—Black cemetery owners in Compton find themselves grappling with a distressing situation as nearly 600 grave markers have been stolen from three cemeteries, across Carson and Compton. Expressing their frustration, these owners are now calling upon the city to take action to address this alarming issue.

Celestina Bishop is owner of Woodlawn Celestial Gardens, one of Los Angeles County’s oldest cemeteries and the eternal resting place for city founders and veterans dating back to The Civil War. She emphasized the moral obligation of local leaders to help safeguard sacred grounds.

Having taken ownership of the cemetery four years ago after the previous owner surrendered the license, Bishop expressed her disappointment in the lack of proactive engagement from city representatives. Despite the damage done to the cemetery by thieves, she revealed that only one council member, Mr. Bauers, has reached out to offer assistance or explore potential resolutions.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Terrence Cumby, a concerned local resident, voiced his frustration during a recent council meeting. “I can’t take it anymore,” he exclaimed. Cumby asked the council to take decisive action, suggesting the implementation of security measures such as purchasing surveillance cameras to help deter future incidents.
