  • PublishedAugust 20, 2025

Los Angeles, CA–The Southern California Black Workers Hub hosted their Black August panel Aug. 13th, honoring the fight for Black worker justice and labor rights in Los Angeles. The event connected the legacy of Black August to present-day struggles for fair wages, union jobs and economic equity. Black August began in California prisons in the 1970s as a commemoration of George Jackson and other activists who resisted systemic oppression. It has since become a nationwide month of remembrance and organizing for Black liberation.

Community members and civic leaders met at the Los Angeles Gathering Spot for a conversation on the links between anti-Black racism, workplace discrimination and the economic exclusion of Black communities. Panelist included Assemblymember Tina Mckinnor, Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas and members of the Los Angeles Black Worker Center. Special guest included Poet Medusa The Goddess and Sekou Andrews.
