  • PublishedMay 2, 2023

Los Angeles, CA—On Saturday April 22, the Office of Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson presented 57 community organizations with funding reallocated from law enforcement to support their services in Council District Eight. Councilmember Harris-Dawson and the CD8 team launched the $4.2M Community Based Organization Grant Fund in 2022. This granting program is fully funded through redirected funds from the Los Angeles Police Department, allocated to impacted communities in South Los Angeles. Council District 8 fought alongside community activists, voters, and City leadership to make the funding opportunity available for local residents.

The Remember to Reimagine awards ceremony included several highlights including transparency of the granting process, along with live Performances, video screenings, and comments from Councilmember Harris-Dawson. Among those selected are local charitable and non-profit organizations who are vital to the health, safety, and quality of life in Council District 8. Many of these CD8 non-profits provide services to children, families, seniors, the unhoused, artists, and others.

Councilmember Harris-Dawson is also currently overseeing the development of a cultural art corridor bringing several pocket parks, murals and public art projects celebrating the contributions of Black Los Angeles. The $100 million revitalization project along the Crenshaw corridor in conjunction with the new METRO train line is also supposed to boost small business investments for Black residents along Crenshaw Boulevard.
