Culver City Elects Yasmine-Imani McMorrin as First Black Woman Mayor

Culver City, CA—On December 11th, 2023, Culver City Council elected Yasmine-Imani McMorrin as Mayor. Marking a significant milestone, McMorrin is not only the sixth woman to hold this esteemed position in the city’s 106-year history but also the first Black woman to assume the role.

Expressing gratitude for the historic opportunity, Mayor McMorrin says:

“I am honored to serve Culver City as its newest Mayor, making history as the first Black woman and only the sixth woman councilmember. I extend my thanks to my colleagues for their vote of confidence, and alongside Vice-Mayor O’Brien, I am ready to lead us through the upcoming year with focus, resilience, and forward-thinking policies.”

Yasmine-Imani McMorrin’s journey to the mayoral seat began with her election as a City Council Member in 2020. Having served as the City Council’s Vice Mayor in the past year, McMorrin brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Before her council tenure, she held the position of Vice Chair of the Culver City General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC).

In accordance with Culver City’s City Charter, Mayor McMorrin will serve a 12-month term, leading her first City Council meeting as Mayor Jan. 8, 2024. The inauguration of the first Black woman Mayor not only signifies a momentous achievement for Culver City but also underlines the city’s commitment to progress and inclusivity in its leadership.
