Iconic Black Beverly Hills Billboard At Risk of Removal in Los Angeles

  • PublishedJanuary 15, 2024

Los Angles,CA—Black Beverly Hills, a brand inspired and deeply rooted in the historic Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, is spearheading an urgent campaign to protect the iconic “Black Beverly Hills” billboard located at Slauson and Overhill. This landmark, featured prominently in TV shows, documentaries, the movie “You People,” and used annually to celebrate Black History Month, has become a symbol of cultural pride for the View Park-Windsor Hills area.

Black Beverly Hills, is both a brand and a community. It is not just a label, it’s a neighborhood that has been home to countless successful Black professionals, entrepreneurs, entertainers, and athletes. The designs created by Black Beverly Hills are a direct inspiration from the neighborhood’s rich history and deep roots.

We are deeply saddened by the recent decision to remove our beloved billboard, which pays homage to the history of View Park-Windsor Hills, Ladera Heights, and Baldwin Hills. As business owners and devoted members of our community, we recognize the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and landmarks.

The “Black Beverly Hills” billboard, standing tall for the past five years, has served as a canvas to honor and celebrate influential Black figures during Black History Month. Recognizing luminaries such as Issa Rae, Jhene Aiko, President Barack Obama, Nipsey Hussle, Jay Z and Beyonce, community resident Ray Charles, Floyd Mayweather, Meghan Markle, John Singleton, Malcolm X, Mayor Karen Bass, Kobe Bryant, and over 40 others in the past four years, the billboard stands as a living tribute to the rich tapestry of Black history and achievement.

Even though the area is referred to as “The Black Beverly Hills,” that is not its real name. Instead, The Black Beverly Hills is made up of a group of prominent Black neighborhoods — Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, Windsor Hills, and View Park — located in the heart of Los Angeles. Due to the large number of successful Black residents who started putting down roots in the area, the neighborhood became known for its wealth and luxury.

The “Black Beverly Hills” sign represents a unique addition to the cultural neighborhoods found across the United States, such as Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Ethiopia, Little Italy, Little Tokyo, Greektown, Little Saigon, Spanish Harlem (El Barrio), Irish Channel, and Polish Hill. Notably, it stands out as the only cultural neighborhood named “Black,” reflecting the uniqueness and pride of the African American community in View Park-Windsor Hills.

We are asking the landlord to reconsider their decision and maintain this meaningful tribute. In doing so, we can honor the legacy of past residents, slow down gentrification in our community, inspire future generations, and uphold an essential cultural landmark in Los Angeles.

Black Beverly Hills urgently calls upon local authorities in Los Angeles County to acknowledge the historical and cultural importance of the “Black Beverly Hills” billboard and intervene to prevent its removal. The company believes that preserving this landmark is not just a matter of community identity but an ongoing commitment to recognizing and celebrating Black history.
